Implementing a Safety Program

Implementing a Safety Program

Where to Start?

The ROSS webinar explains how a company builds a strong machine safety program and why it matters for the people who run and maintain equipment every day. It starts with knowing what machines you have, checking their current safety condition, and understanding what needs to be fixed first. Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) is a big part of this—operators need clear procedures that match what actually happens on the floor, labeled energy‑isolation points, and training so everyone knows when and how to lock out a machine safely.

Proper System Implementation and Testing

The company also creates safety standards that guide how machines should be guarded, how safety devices should work, and what responsibilities employees, maintenance, and OEMs have. Audits help identify problems such as missing guards, unsafe access points, bad e‑stops, or unclear LOTO steps, and they help prioritize which machines need attention first. Some equipment may require a full risk assessment to figure out safer ways to run, maintain, or fix it. After improvements are made, everything must be tested to make sure safety devices actually work.

Building a Culture of Safety Through Training and Consistent Standards

Ongoing training—like basic safety classes, LOTO training, and more advanced courses for maintenance and engineers—helps everyone understand hazards and recognize unsafe conditions. Finally, the presentation stresses that safety is part of the culture: small fixes matter, consistent standards matter, and showing employees that issues are addressed builds trust.

The overall goal is simple—keep operators safe, keep machines reliable, and make sure everyone knows how to work safely every day.
