Vertical Compactor with Hydraulic Actuator

Vertical Hydraulic Compactor

Application Hazards

Recycling applications involving hydraulic compactors contain a range of hazards associated with operating such machinery, including crushing, shearing, entrapment, projection of materials and fluids, electrical shock, and environmental risks like slips and exposure to noise. These risks are particularly pronounced due to the presence of moving parts, high-pressure hydraulic systems, and the potential for unexpected machine actuation.

Risk Assessment

A structured risk assessment based on ISO 12100 should be conducted, categorizing hazards such as entrapment, high pressure, suspended loads, and impact injuries. Tasks like feeding material, manual bale tie-down, and bale removal are analyzed for their exposure to these risks. Preventive measures, especially the use of Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures need to be implemented to ensure complete energy isolation—including electrical, hydraulic, and gravitational sources—during maintenance and operation.

Risk Mitigation

There are specific safety functions and devices designed to mitigate these risks. These include emergency stops, two-hand control systems, and interlocked guards for various access points around the compactor. Each safety function is rated according to performance level (PL e) and category (CAT 3 or 4), ensuring compliance with EN ISO 13849 standards. Devices such as dual safety contactors, hydraulic block-and-stop valves, and RF-coded non-contact sensors are integrated into the system to monitor and control machine status in real time. Guarding systems, with both fixed and movable guards designed to prevent access to hazardous zones should also be added. These guards are constructed to block entry from all directions and are securely fastened to prevent tampering. The architecture of the safety system includes hydraulic valves, electric contactors, emergency stops, and safety relays, all working together to ensure safe operation.

Summary

ROSS Controls provides a comprehensive safety solution for vertical hydraulic compactors used in recycling applications. By combining rigorous risk assessment, advanced safety devices, and adherence to international standards, the system effectively minimizes operational hazards. The document reinforces the importance of following OSHA regulations and best practices to protect workers and maintain safe, efficient operations.
