RSe Series Double Valve Product Overview
The 3/2 RSe Series valve is designed to supply air to a zone or entire machine/system until signaled to shut off and exhaust residual downstream pneumatic energy from the machine. Thus, reducing the hazards associated with the presence of residual energy during employee access and/or minor servicing.
The safety function of the 3/2 RSe Series valve is to shut off supply of pneumatic energy and to exhaust any pneumatic energy from downstream of the valve. Note: The 3/2 RSe Series valve cannot exhaust pneumatic energy from downstream of obstructions such as check valves and closed center function valves. The RSe Series valves are designed for external monitoring for safe, redundant operation of the valves.
The RSe Series valves are constructed of redundant, 3/2 spool type valves, and have an overall function of a single solenoid pilot-operated, spring return valve. Each single valve in the RSe Series is equipped with a PNP proximity sensor. Monitoring both of these sensors on each actuation and de-actuation of the RSe Series valve provides a diagnostic coverage of 99%. Monitoring of these sensors is to be done by an external monitoring system.

Product Overview
The ROSS Controls RSe Series is a redundant spool-type safe exhaust double valve that achieves Safety Category 4, Performance Level e (PL e) per ISO 13849-1:2015 through an external monitoring architecture using dual PNP proximity sensors. Each valve element in the RSe Series is equipped with a single PNP proximity sensor that reports actual spool position. Monitoring both sensors on every actuation and de-actuation cycle provides diagnostic coverage up to 99 percent, satisfying Category 4 requirements when the monitoring function is performed by an external safety control system.
The RSe Series uses a redundant spool-and-sleeve construction, a different architecture from the poppet-based DM1, DM2C, and M35 Series. The RSe consists of two individual 5/2 single-solenoid spool valves, each with its own proximity sensor. Both solenoids must be operated simultaneously for the valve to actuate from the safe (de-energized) to the supply state. This dual solenoid requirement means that a single solenoid failure cannot cause the valve to supply air unintentionally, preserving the safety function.
Automatic reset is standard on the RSe Series: de-energizing both solenoids returns the valve to the safe (exhaust) condition. This makes the RSe suitable for applications where the control system architecture handles safety state management and where operator-acknowledged reset is not required at the valve level.
Beyond standard safe exhaust, the RSe Series supports additional safety application modes. Safe Return Dual Pressure applications use the RSe to extend a cylinder with supply pressure at port 3 and retract with supply pressure at port 5, providing controlled bi-directional cylinder motion as part of a safety-rated circuit. Safe Pressure Select applications use the RSe to safely control the pressure applied to a machine operation, selecting between two pressure levels as part of a safety function.
The RSe is available in three base sizes: 1/8 inch, 1/4 inch, and 1/2 inch port sizes, with flow capacities ranging from 0.9 Cv (886 Nl/min) for the 1/8 inch size to 3.06 Cv (3,011 Nl/min) for the 1/2 inch size. The base-mounted design accommodates flexible piping with ports on both sides and includes captive valve-to-base mounting screws. SISTEMA Library files are available for download.
Key Engineering Features
- Safety Category 4, PL e (ISO 13849-1:2015) via External Monitoring - Achieves Category 4, PL e through external safety PLC or safety relay monitoring of both PNP proximity sensors on every actuation and de-actuation cycle.
- Dual PNP Proximity Sensors (99% Diagnostic Coverage) - One PNP proximity sensor per valve element reports actual spool position. Monitoring both sensors on every cycle provides up to 99% DC, detecting valve element faults before they can compromise the safety function.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: What safety performance does the RSe Series achieve?
A: The RSe Series achieves Safety Category 4, Performance Level e (PL e) per ISO 13849-1:2015 when both PNP proximity sensors are monitored by an external safety control system on each actuation and de-actuation cycle. Monitoring both sensors provides diagnostic coverage up to 99 percent.
Q: How does PNP proximity sensor monitoring provide 99% DC?
A: Each valve element has one PNP proximity sensor that reports actual spool position. By monitoring both sensors on every valve cycle, the external safety controller can detect valve element faults such as a spool stuck in the energized (supply) position when the solenoid has been de-energized. This bi-directional monitoring of both elements on every cycle achieves up to 99 percent diagnostic coverage per ISO 13849-1.
Q: What is the difference between the RSe and the M35 or DM1/DM2C?
A: The RSe uses spool-and-sleeve construction versus the poppet design of the M35, DM1, and DM2C. The RSe also uses PNP proximity sensors for spool position sensing (external monitoring) versus the pressure sensors in the M35. The RSe supports dual 5/2 valve function enabling Safe Return Dual Pressure and Safe Pressure Select modes in addition to standard safe exhaust, which the single-sided 3/2 poppet valves do not provide. The RSe is available in smaller port sizes (1/8" to 1/2") compared to the M35 (1/2" to 3/4") and the DM1/DM2C (up to 2-1/2" exhaust).
Q: What is Safe Return Dual Pressure and when is it used?
A: Safe Return Dual Pressure is an application where the RSe is configured to extend a cylinder with supply pressure at port 3 and retract the cylinder with a separate supply pressure at port 5. This provides safety-rated bidirectional cylinder control in a single valve assembly. It is used in applications such as safety-rated clamping functions where the extend (clamp) and retract (release) motions both require a safety-rated control valve.
Q: What is Safe Pressure Select and when is it used?
A: Safe Pressure Select is an application where the RSe selects between two pressure levels under safety PLC control. For example, a low pressure level for operator-accessible loading and a high pressure level for automated machining or forming. The safety function ensures that high pressure cannot be applied while the guard is open. The RSe provides the safety-rated pressure selection valve in this architecture.
Q: What are the available port sizes and flow capacities?
A: Three base sizes: 1/8 inch (0.9 Cv / 886 Nl/min supply), 1/4 inch (1.09 Cv / 1,073 Nl/min supply), and 1/2 inch (3.06 Cv / 3,011 Nl/min supply). Exhaust flow capacities are lower: 0.68 Cv (1/8"), 0.91 Cv (1/4"), 1.95 Cv (1/2").
Q: What is the reset behavior of the RSe?
A: The RSe uses automatic reset: de-energizing both solenoids returns the valve to the safe exhaust condition. There is no manual reset requirement. This contrasts with the DM2C's latching manual reset.
Q: What solenoid and sensor connections are used?
A: Solenoid connections: EN 175301-803 Form C. PNP proximity sensor connections: M8 connector. Both use industry-standard connectors for reliable field wiring.
Q: Can the RSe be used in NPT and G thread configurations?
A: Yes. Both NPT and G (BSPP) thread options are available across all three base sizes.
Q: Is a SISTEMA Library available?
A: Yes. A downloadable SISTEMA Library file for the RSe Series is available at rosscontrols.com.
Q: What temperature range does the RSe support?
A: Ambient temperature: 40 to 120 F (4 to 50 C). For the 1/8 inch body (RSe6EDA10A31P), media temperature range is 40 to 120 F (4 to 50 C). Verify media temperature requirements against the specific variant specification.
Q: What are the air quality requirements for the RSe?
A: The RSe requires compressed, filtered air per ISO 8573-1 Class 7:4:4. Spool-and-sleeve valves are more sensitive to particulate contamination than poppet valves, making 5-micron upstream filtration and clean air supply especially important for RSe reliability and service life.
Installation & Maintenance Guidelines
- Mount the RSe base and connect all field piping before installing the valve body. Captive screws secure the valve to the base.
- Connect supply to one inlet port. Plug unused inlet port with the included plug. Connect machine circuit to outlet port. Plug unused outlet port.
- For Safe Return Dual Pressure applications, connect the extension supply to port 3 and the retraction supply to port 5 as specified in the application diagram.
- Wire both EN 175301-803 Form C solenoid connectors to the safety controller outputs. Both solenoids must be simultaneously energized to actuate and simultaneously de-energized to exhaust.
- Wire both M8 PNP proximity sensor connectors to the safety controller's dual-channel sensor inputs. Configure the controller to monitor both sensor states on every cycle.
- Program the safety controller to initiate a safety stop if either sensor fails to report the expected state within the response window on any cycle.
- Supply filtered compressed air per ISO 8573-1 Class 7:4:4. 5-micron upstream filtration is critical for spool-type valves.
- Verify operating pressure is within range. The RSe operating pressure max is 145 psi (10 bar) per the 1/8 inch body datasheet; verify against specific configuration.
- Perform commissioning test: simultaneous energization of both solenoids, verify supply state and sensor feedback; simultaneous de-energization, verify exhaust state and sensor feedback.
- Document commissioning results and SISTEMA calculations. Establish periodic proof test schedule per ISO 13849-1 requirements.
