DM1 Series E Control Reliable Double Valves – Installation Instructions (Discontinued)

Overview

The ROSS Controls® DM1 Series E is a control-reliable double valve with dynamic monitoring for Category 3 safety applications. Basic Size 2 configuration. The DM1 Series E uses two redundant solenoid pilots and two sets of valve elements. Both pilots must be energized simultaneously for the valve to supply air from inlet port 1 to outlet port 2. If valve elements do not shift in synchronization within the preset discordance time, the valve enters an abnormal condition exhausting downstream pressure through port 3.

A key characteristic of the DM1 Series E is its automatic reset behavior: unlike the DM2® Series E which requires a dedicated reset signal after lockout, the DM1 Series E returns to ready-to-run as soon as the abnormal condition clears and electrical power is removed from both pilot solenoids. This automatic-reset behavior is suitable for Category 3 applications. Without the optional status indicator, a momentary lockout could go undetected.

Note: DM1 Series E valves are discontinued. Consult ROSS Controls at 1-800-GET-ROSS or visit www.rosscontrols.com for replacement product options.

Key Features

Dynamic Monitoring for Category 3 Applications

The DM1 Series E monitors the synchronous operation of its two internal valve elements during each actuation and de-actuation cycle. If asynchronous operation is detected, the valve enters a protective exhaust condition. This dynamic monitoring ensures that a single valve element failure is detected and results in a safe state, making the DM1 Series E suitable for Category 3 machine safety applications per EN ISO 13849-1.

Automatic Reset Function

After an abnormal condition, removing electrical power to both pilot solenoids clears the lockout if the underlying fault condition has also cleared. This automatic-reset feature means that a momentary lockout condition could go undetected during machine operation without the optional status indicator pressure switch. The ROSS recommendation is to use the status indicator for Category 3 applications.

Optional Status Indicator

The optional status indicator pressure switch provides a 4-contact output (Contact 4 is ground). Contacts 1 and 3 are closed when pressurized (normal, normally open); contacts 1 and 2 are closed when depressurized (abnormal/lockout, normally closed). The status indicator remains depressurized until the valve is ready to run after power has been removed from both solenoids.

Applications

Category 3 Industrial Safety Circuits

The DM1 Series E is designed for Category 3 safety-rated pneumatic applications where redundancy and fault detection are required but automatic reset after a cleared fault is acceptable. Typical applications include pneumatic presses, clamps, and actuators in industrial machinery where a single-element failure must be detected and result in a safe state.

Machinery Safety Pneumatic Control

The DM1 Series E provides redundant pneumatic control required in safety-rated machine control systems. When integrated with the optional status indicator, fault conditions are communicated to the machine PLC or safety relay, enabling appropriate machine stop and operator alert functions. The status indicator pressure switch output integrates directly with standard machine control inputs.

Safety and Compliance Standards

DM1 Series E valves are designed for Category 3 applications per EN ISO 13849-1. The valve is expressly not for press clutch/brake applications. After installation or repair, the valve must be tested following the DM1 Series E testing procedure before normal use. Before any disassembly or maintenance: turn off electrical power, shut off air supply, exhaust all air, and lock out all power sources.

Installation and Setup Guide

Air Line and Port Preparation

Before installation, blow all air lines clean of contaminants. Install a 5-micron-rated filter in the inlet line close to the valve. The supply must provide adequate pressure and adequate flow volume on demand. Locate the valve as close as possible to the actuated mechanism to minimize outlet line volume. Do not restrict exhaust port 3 flow.

DM1 Series E Testing Procedure

(A) Energize both solenoids simultaneously – port 2 pressurized, no flow to port 3. (B) De-energize one solenoid – valve enters lockout: port 2 exhausts to port 3 with audible exhaust flow. (C) Re-energize the de-energized solenoid – valve must remain in lockout. (D) De-energize both solenoids – valve returns to ready-to-run: no pressure at port 2, no audible exhaust. (E-H) Repeat steps A-D with the other solenoid. Both solenoids must individually trigger proper lockout.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the key difference between DM1 Series E and DM2® Series E?

A: DM1 Series E uses automatic reset (returns to ready-to-run automatically when fault clears and power removed from both solenoids) – Category 3. DM2® Series E has a memory function requiring a dedicated reset solenoid signal – Category 4. Use DM2® Series E when undetected momentary lockouts are unacceptable.

Q: Can the DM1 Series E be used for press clutch/brake applications?

A: No. The DM1 Series E is expressly not intended for press clutch/brake applications. ROSS produces the DM2® Series D and other configurations specifically for press clutch/brake use.

Q: How does the DM1 Series E indicate a lockout condition?

A: During a lockout condition there is a small but audible flow of air from exhaust port 3. If equipped with the optional status indicator, the pressure switch changes state (contacts 1 and 2 close) to signal the abnormal condition to the machine control system.

Q: What does automatic reset mean for the DM1 Series E?

A: Automatic reset means the DM1 Series E returns to ready-to-run on its own once the fault condition has cleared and power has been removed from both pilot solenoids. No dedicated reset signal is required, unlike the DM2® Series E.

Q: What air filtration is recommended for the DM1 Series E?

A: A 5-micron-rated air filter installed in the inlet line close to the valve is strongly recommended. The filter bowl must be drained regularly; an automatic drain is recommended if manual draining is inconvenient.

Q: Is the DM1 Series E still available?

A: The DM1 Series E is a discontinued product. Contact ROSS Controls at 1-800-GET-ROSS or www.rosscontrols.com for current replacement product recommendations.

Q: What service kits are available for the DM1 Series E?

A: Service kits are listed in the official installation documentation (Doc ID 76). For current service kit availability on discontinued products, contact ROSS Controls directly at 1-800-GET-ROSS.

Q: What happens if only one DM1 Series E solenoid is energized?

A: If only one solenoid is energized while the valve was already actuated, the valve enters the lockout condition, exhausting downstream pressure through port 3. Both solenoids must be energized virtually simultaneously for normal actuation.
