15 Series Stainless Steel Manual Lockout L-O-X® Valves Installation Instructions

Overview

ROSS Controls, founded in 1921 with over 100 years of leadership in fluid power, offers the 15 Series Manual Lockout L-O-X® Valves in 316 stainless steel construction for corrosive, washdown, food processing, pharmaceutical, and other demanding environments where carbon steel or zinc-body components are not suitable. These stainless steel energy isolation valves provide the same proven L-O-X® lockout function as the standard 15 Series but in a corrosion-resistant body that meets the most stringent material requirements.

Available in port sizes from 1/4 to 2 inch, the stainless steel L-O-X® valve is designed for in-line mounting in the main or branch air supply line. Pushing the handle inward cuts off air supply and exhausts downstream lines to the next obstruction. Pulling the handle outward restores air flow. The valve must be padlocked in the closed position during maintenance to prevent inadvertent re-pressurization.

Per specifications and regulations, these valves are energy isolation devices, NOT emergency stop devices. For support, contact ROSS at 1-800-GET-ROSS or visit www.rosscontrols.com.

Key Features

316 Stainless Steel Spool Construction

The 316 stainless steel spool and sleeve construction provides excellent resistance to corrosion, oxidation, and chemical attack. This makes the 15 Series stainless steel valve the standard choice for food and beverage production, dairy and meat processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, outdoor installations, and marine environments. The stainless construction also facilitates frequent washdown cleaning without valve degradation.

Full Port Range from 1/4 to 2 Inch

Available in NPT port sizes from 1/4 through 2 inch to accommodate virtually all compressed air line sizes. The lock hole diameter is 0.34 inch (8.64 mm) for port sizes 1/4 through 2. Lock hole depth varies by port size: 0.44 inch for 1/4; 0.47 inch for 1/2; 0.55 inch for 1 and 2 inch. The consistent lock hole design accommodates standard padlocks.

Expanded Temperature Range

The stainless steel 15 Series offers a lower minimum operating temperature of 30°F (-1°C) versus 40°F for standard models, extending its applicability to refrigerated food processing areas and cold storage installations. The Pop-Up Indicator (model 1155A30) and Pressure Switch (model 1162A30) are available specifically for use with the stainless steel valve in the 1/8 NPT sensing port.

Applications

Food and Beverage Processing

Food and beverage production environments require stainless steel components that withstand high-pressure washdown cleaning with caustic chemicals and sanitizing agents. The 15 Series stainless steel L-O-X® valve meets these requirements, providing reliable pneumatic energy isolation for filling lines, packaging equipment, conveyors, and process machinery in food-grade environments. The smooth stainless exterior minimizes bacteria harborage points.

Pharmaceutical and Clean Room Applications

Pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities and clean rooms require materials that do not contaminate the production environment. Stainless steel components are standard in these facilities. The 15 Series stainless steel L-O-X® valve satisfies these material requirements while providing the same certified lockout/tagout function as the standard version, ensuring safety compliance without compromising production environment cleanliness requirements.

Safety and Compliance Standards

IMPORTANT: These valves are energy isolation devices, NOT emergency stop devices. Comply with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147, ANSI/ASSE Z244.1, ANSI B11.0, RIA 15.06, ISO 13849, ANSI/PMMI B155.1, ANSI B11.2, EN 13736, ANSI B11.3, ANSI B11.19, and ANSI B11.TR6. Use a 5-micron rated air filter near the valve. ROSS does not recommend disassembling 15 Series L-O-X® valves for cleaning or repair. For lower temperature ratings than 30°F, consult ROSS.

Installation and Setup Guide

Installation Steps

  • Step 1: Blow air lines clean before installing the valve.
  • Step 2: Install 5-micron rated filter in the inlet line close to the valve.
  • Step 3: Install valve in main or branch air line with handle accessible for lockout.
  • Step 4: Connect inlet (Port 1), outlet (Port 2), and exhaust (Port 3) lines.
  • Step 5: Do not restrict exhaust port; silencer may be installed to reduce noise.
  • Step 6: For pipe installation: engage one turn, apply sealant (not tape), tighten securely.
  • Step 7: Install Pop-Up Indicator (1155A30) or Pressure Switch (1162A30) in 1/8 NPT sensing port.
  • Step 8: Test lockout by pushing handle inward, verifying exhaust of downstream pressure, and applying padlock.
