27 Series Poppet Valves & Adaptors – Installation & Operating Instructions

Overview

The ROSS Controls® 27 Series is a poppet valve with metal internals designed for inline mounting, offering comprehensive directional control across a broad range of port sizes from 1/4 inch through 2-1/2 inch. Manufactured by ROSS Controls – a company with over 100 years of fluid power engineering since its founding in 1921 – the 27 Series is available in pressure-controlled, direct double solenoid, and single solenoid pilot configurations.

The 27 Series is also available with the EEZ-ON® valve option, which provides soft-start pressurization of downstream circuits. EEZ-ON® models (2/2 configuration) operate at 30 to 150 psig (2 to 10 bar) for all port sizes. This soft-start capability is essential in applications where sudden pressurization could damage actuators, cylinders, or sensitive downstream components.

IMPORTANT NOTE: ROSS 27 Series valves are not designed as control valves for air clutch/brake mechanisms on mechanical power presses, and must not be installed for such use. Only double valves conforming to OSHA standards shall be used in press clutch/brake applications. For adaptor information, refer to pages 3 and 4 of the official installation documentation. Key Features

EEZ-ON® Soft-Start Option for Controlled Pressurization

ROSS EEZ-ON® technology provides a controlled, gradual pressurization of downstream pneumatic circuits when the 27 Series valve is energized. This soft-start function eliminates the pressure shock that can damage actuators, cylinders, and tools when a pneumatic circuit is suddenly pressurized from zero. EEZ-ON® models are available in 2/2 configuration for port sizes 1/4 inch through 2-1/2 inch, operating at 30 to 150 psig (2 to 10 bar).

Wide Port Size Range – 1/4 to 2-1/2 Inch

The 27 Series is offered in port sizes from 1/4 inch to 2-1/2 inch, making it scalable from small automation circuits to large-bore high-flow applications. Pressure ranges: 1/4 to 1-1/2 port sizes support 15 to 150 psig (1 to 10 bar); 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 port sizes support 30 to 150 psig (2 to 10 bar). This broad range accommodates diverse industrial flow requirements.

Adaptor System for Application Flexibility

The 27 Series includes a comprehensive adaptor system documented on pages 3 and 4 of the official installation documentation. Adaptors allow the 27 Series poppet valve body to interface with different port configurations, air index systems, and custom mounting requirements. This modularity extends the application range of the 27 Series beyond standard inline mounting.

Direct Double Solenoid and Single Solenoid Pilot Options

The 27 Series is available with direct double solenoid control, single solenoid pilot control, and pressure pilot control. Direct double solenoid models provide the fastest response as they actuate directly without a separate pilot stage. Single solenoid pilot models spring-return to normal position on de-energization. Pressure pilot models use remote air signals for actuation in areas where electrical connections are undesirable.

Applications

Machine Safety Energy Isolation with EEZ-ON® Soft Start

The 27 Series with EEZ-ON® option is widely used as the control valve in pneumatic energy isolation systems where controlled re-pressurization after a lockout/tagout event is required. When power is restored after maintenance, the EEZ-ON® function gradually re-pressurizes the downstream circuit, preventing sudden unexpected actuator movement. This combination supports safe machine restart procedures.

Industrial Pneumatic Circuit Directional Control

In standard directional control applications, 27 Series poppet valves provide reliable inline flow control across a broad port size range. The poppet design's inherent contamination tolerance makes the 27 Series suitable for environments with imperfect air quality, and the available adaptor system enables custom integration into non-standard piping configurations.

Safety and Compliance Standards

ROSS 27 Series valves must not be used for air clutch/brake control on mechanical power presses. Installation and maintenance must be performed by trained pneumatic equipment personnel. Before service, disconnect electrical supply, shut off air, and exhaust the system. Use a 5-micron air filter in the inlet line. Pilot supply pressure must equal or exceed inlet pressure at all times.

All CAUTIONS and WARNINGS on page 4 of the official installation document (Doc ID 63) must be read carefully and thoroughly before installation.

Installation and Setup Guide

Pilot Supply Connection

For pressure-controlled models, connect a 1/4-inch control line to the threaded port in the air cap at the top of the valve. See valve specifications for required pilot supply pressures. For solenoid-controlled models, pressure for the pilot valve is supplied internally unless the valve is designated for external pilot supply. Pilot supply pressure must equal or exceed inlet pressure.

Electrical Supply for Solenoid Models

The voltage and hertz ratings are shown on the pilot housing. The electrical supply must correspond exactly to these ratings; otherwise solenoids are subject to early failure. If power is supplied by a transformer, it must handle inrush current without significant voltage drop. Refer to valve specifications for inrush current data.

Exhaust Port and Noise Management

Do not restrict air flow from exhaust Port 3 or pilot body as this can adversely affect valve operation. To reduce exhaust noise, a ROSS silencer may be used. ROSS silencers reduce impact noise by as much as 25 dB with little back pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the EEZ-ON® option on the 27 Series?

A: EEZ-ON® is a ROSS Controls proprietary soft-start feature that provides controlled, gradual pressurization of downstream circuits when the 27 Series valve opens. This eliminates pressure shock and protects actuators and tools from sudden unexpected movement during initial pressurization.

Q: What port sizes are available in the 27 Series?

A: The 27 Series is available in port sizes from 1/4 inch to 2-1/2 inch. Smaller sizes (1/4 to 1-1/2 inch) support 15 to 150 psig inlet pressure. Larger sizes (1-1/2 to 2-1/2 inch) support 30 to 150 psig inlet pressure.

Q: Can 27 Series valves be used on mechanical power press clutch/brake applications?

A: No. ROSS 27 Series valves are not designed for air clutch/brake control on mechanical power presses. Only double valves conforming to OSHA standards should be used in such applications.
