Dale CP, CX, LF, LX Series Inline Poppet Valves & Manifolds – A Model Installation Instructions (Discontinued)

Overview

The ROSS Controls® Dale Series CP, CX, LF, and LX inline poppet valves and manifolds (A Model) feature metal internals designed for inline mounting. Available in normally closed (NC) and normally open (NO) 2-way (2/2) and 3-way (3/2) configurations, these valves deliver high performance in demanding directional control applications. The Dale Series A Model is the first-generation design; the current B Model supersedes it.

Dale Series CP and CX valves provide the flexibility of 2-way or 3-way operation with high flow rates and zero leakage poppet sealing. The LF and LX series offer extended pressure ranges for high-force applications. All Dale Series valves feature metal-seated poppet elements providing bubble-tight shutoff and long service life. The external pilot conversion feature allows field adaptation without removing the valve from service.

Note: Dale Series A Model valves are discontinued products. The Dale Series B Model is the current replacement. Contact ROSS Controls at 1-800-GET-ROSS or visit www.rosscontrols.com for replacement guidance.

Key Features

Metal-Internals Poppet Design for Zero Leakage

Dale Series A Model valves use metal-seated poppet internals providing zero static leakage and long operational life even in challenging environments. This is particularly advantageous in applications with intermittent operation, where elastomer-seated valves can experience seal set and increased leak-by over time. Metal internals also provide excellent contamination tolerance.

Field-Convertible External Pilot Supply

Dale Series CP valves can be field converted to external pilot supply by removing the pipe plug from port X-1 and installing a 10-32 or 1/8-inch air supply to the X-1 port on the base manifold. This conversion allows the valve to operate with a separate pilot supply for low-inlet-pressure applications or for vacuum service, which requires external pilot supply.

Wide Pressure Range – Vacuum to 250 psig

Solenoid pilot valves operate from vacuum to 145 psig (10.0 bar); pressure-controlled valves operate from vacuum to 250 psig (17.2 bar). This range accommodates both standard industrial compressed air applications and specialized high-pressure or vacuum process applications.

Applications

Industrial Directional Control and Isolation

Dale Series CP, CX, LF, and LX inline poppet valves are used for directional control of pneumatic actuators, cylinders, and process equipment. The zero-leakage poppet sealing makes them suitable for applications requiring positive shutoff, including gas control, vacuum systems, and processes where internal leakage is unacceptable. The stackable manifold design simplifies multi-valve installations.

Vacuum and High-Pressure Applications

The broad pressure range of the Dale Series A Model (vacuum to 250 psig for pressure-controlled versions) covers applications that cannot be served by standard industrial pneumatic valves. For vacuum service, the external pilot supply port X-1 is required. For high-pressure applications, the LF and LX variants provide appropriate pressure ratings.

Safety and Compliance Standards

Dale Series CP, CX, LF, LX valves are not designed as control valves for air clutch/brake mechanisms on mechanical power presses and must not be used for that purpose. Only double valves conforming to OSHA standards should be used in press applications. All installation and maintenance must be performed by trained pneumatic equipment personnel. Before servicing: turn off electrical power, shut off air supply, exhaust all air, and lock out all power sources.

Installation and Setup Guide

Pilot Supply Configuration

For standard solenoid-controlled Dale Series A valves, pilot pressure is supplied internally and no special connection is required. If external pilot supply is needed (for vacuum service or low-inlet-pressure applications), remove the pipe plug from port X-1 and connect a 10-32 or 1/8-inch air supply. Pilot pressure must be equal to or greater than inlet pressure at all times.

Air Line Preparation and Port Installation

Before installation, blow air lines clean of all contaminants. Install a 5-micron-rated air filter close to the valve inlet. Install pipe by engaging one turn, applying pipe thread sealant to male threads (tape not recommended), then tightening. Do not allow sealant to enter valve internals. Locate the valve as close as possible to the actuated mechanism for fastest response.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between the Dale Series A Model and B Model?

A: The Dale Series A Model is the first-generation design; the B Model is the current replacement with updated features and connector options. Contact ROSS for specific comparison information.

Q: What pressure range do Dale Series A Model valves support?

A: Solenoid pilot versions operate from vacuum to 145 psig (10.0 bar). Pressure-controlled versions operate from vacuum to 250 psig (17.2 bar). Pilot pressure must equal or exceed inlet pressure.

Q: Can Dale Series CP valves be converted to external pilot supply in the field?

A: Yes. Remove the pipe plug from port X-1 and install a 10-32 or 1/8-inch air supply to that port on the base manifold. External pilot supply is required for vacuum service applications.

Q: Are Dale Series A Model valves suitable for press clutch/brake applications?

A: No. Dale Series CP, CX, LF, LX valves are not designed as control valves for air clutch/brake mechanisms on mechanical power presses. Use double valves conforming to OSHA standards for press applications.

Q: What electrical connectors are used for Dale Series A Model CP valves?

A: Dale Series CP and CX solenoid pilot valves use EN 175301-803 Form C connectors for 1/4" to 1" inlet sizes and Form A connectors for 1-1/2" to 2-1/2" inlet sizes, available with or without LED indicator lights at 24 VDC or 120 VAC.

Q: What lubricants are compatible with Dale Series A Model valves?

A: Use petroleum base oils with oxidation inhibitors, aniline point between 180°F and 220°F, ISO 32 or lighter viscosity. Avoid oils with phosphate additives (e.g., zinc dithiophosphate) and diester oils. Lubricate sliding surfaces with MobilGrease 28 before reassembly.

Q: Is the Dale Series A Model still available?

A: Dale Series A Model valves are discontinued. The current replacement is the Dale Series B Model. Contact ROSS Controls at 1-800-GET-ROSS or www.rosscontrols.com for current availability.

Q: What does LF vs LX designation mean in the Dale Series?

A: Within the ROSS Dale Series, LF and LX designations indicate variants with extended pressure capability compared to standard CP and CX series. Consult ROSS for application-specific selection guidance for the specific flow and pressure differences.
