Lubricators Full-Size Series Installation & Operating Instructions

Overview

ROSS Controls, founded in 1921 with over 100 years of leadership in fluid power, offers the Inline Lubricators Full-Size Series as a robust, high-capacity lubrication solution for large-bore industrial pneumatic systems. These lubricators are designed for use with compressed air systems requiring generous oil delivery to protect cylinders, actuators, valves, and other downstream pneumatic components. The Full-Size Series accommodates larger line sizes and higher air flow rates than the Bantam or High-Capacity Series.

The sight-feed design provides an external tamper-resistant adjusting knob for oil delivery control, with a nylon sight dome for visual drop rate monitoring. The lubricator must be installed vertically with the bowl at the bottom, downstream of all filters and regulators in the air circuit. Fill with Light Spindle Oil 80-120 SSU at 100°F; never use compound oils with graphite, soap fillers, or phosphate-type additives.

Key Features

High-Capacity Oil Reservoir for Extended Service Intervals

The Full-Size Series lubricators offer larger bowl capacities than the Bantam or high-capacity compact series, reducing the frequency of oil refills in high-flow systems. Extended bowl configurations are available for applications requiring the longest possible service intervals between maintenance stops. Bowl options include standard and extended aluminum metal bowls as well as polycarbonate bowl options.

External Tamper-Resistant Adjustment

The external adjusting knob provides convenient oil delivery rate adjustment while the system is operating, without interrupting air supply to downstream equipment. For tamper-resistant operation in production environments, the adjusting knob is removable. The sight dome gives real-time visual confirmation of oil delivery rate for routine preventive maintenance inspections.

Serviceable by Cleaning

The cartridge assembly, bowl ring, bowl assembly, and fill plug can each be serviced independently. The cartridge assembly is secured by four screws; when reinstalling, hand-start the screws to re-engage original self-tapping threads. Clean all components with soap and water. If cleaning does not restore proper operation, replace worn parts using ROSS service kits.

Applications

Large-Flow Industrial Systems

Heavy industrial pneumatic systems — including large automation lines, stamping and forming equipment, paint spray systems, and bulk material handling — require high-capacity lubricators capable of delivering adequate oil mist at the high air flow rates these systems consume. The Full-Size Series is designed for these demanding applications.

Main Air Line Lubrication Stations

In facilities with centralized air preparation stations feeding multiple machine circuits, Full-Size lubricators serve as the main lubrication point for all downstream equipment. Their larger bowl volume reduces maintenance frequency and ensures uninterrupted oil supply to all connected pneumatic actuators and valves.

Safety and Compliance Standards

Depressurize and lock out before any service or fill operations. Use only compatible petroleum-based ISO 32 lubricants with aniline point 180°F to 220°F. Avoid phosphate-additive oils and diester oils. For polycarbonate bowl models: use only with air, install shatterguard, avoid chemical attack substances, replace cracked bowls immediately. Follow applicable lockout/tagout procedures per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147.

Installation and Setup Guide

Installation Steps

  • Step 1: Depressurize and lock out air pressure.
  • Step 2: Ensure upstream pipes are clean and free of liquids.
  • Step 3: Install as near as possible to the device served.
  • Step 4: Orient so air flows from inlet to outlet per head marking.
  • Step 5: Install vertically with bowl at the bottom — mandatory.
  • Step 6: Install downstream of all filters and regulators.
  • Step 7: Fill with Light Spindle Oil 80-120 SSU at 100°F.
  • Step 8: Pressurize and set oil delivery rate (typically one drop per minute).
  • Step 9: Confirm drop rate via sight dome; adjust as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What oil is recommended?

A: Light Spindle Oil 80-120 SSU at 100°F. Do not use compound oils with graphite, soap fillers, or phosphate additives.

Q: Must the lubricator be installed vertically?

A: Yes. The lubricator must be installed vertically with the bowl at the bottom for correct operation.

Q: What is the correct oil feed rate?

A: One drop per minute is adequate for most applications. Adjust using the external knob and monitor via the sight dome.

Q: How do I service the cartridge assembly?

A: Remove the four screws and lift out the cartridge. Hand-start the screws when reinstalling to re-engage original self-tapping threads.

Q: What is the maximum operating pressure?

A: 200 psig (14 bar) for metal bowl configurations.

Q: Where should the lubricator be in the air circuit?

A: Downstream of all filters and regulators, close to the equipment being lubricated.

Q: What temperature range is rated?

A: 40° to 175°F (4° to 80°C) for metal bowl models.

Q: How do I contact ROSS for service kits?

A: Call 1-800-GET-ROSS or visit www.rosscontrols.com to order service kits or find an authorized distributor.
