ROSS Inline Filters — High-Capacity Series (Ports 3/4 & 1; Flow to 275 scfm): Installation and Operating Instructions
Overview
The ROSS® Inline Filters, High-Capacity Series 275 scfm are premium-quality compressed air filters designed to remove particulate contamination, moisture, and debris from industrial pneumatic systems. Protecting downstream equipment from contamination is critical to maintaining valve performance, actuator reliability, and system longevity.
Rated for flow up to 275 scfm, with port sizes of 3/4 and 1 inch, these filters are engineered for modular or inline installation upstream of regulators, lubricators, and directional control valves. The Aluminum body provides durable construction, and nitrile seals ensure long-term compatibility with compressed air service.
ROSS Controls has delivered premium air preparation products since 1921. This document provides complete installation, operation, maintenance, and safety guidance. Read all instructions before beginning installation.
Key Features
Filter Element Technology
The Inline Filters, High-Capacity Series 275 scfm uses 5-micron rated polyethylene; optional 5-, 20-, 40-micron sintered bronze filter elements. Polyethylene elements should not be cleaned and must be replaced when dirty or when the pressure differential reaches 8 psid. Sintered bronze elements may be cleaned by soaking in a suitable solvent for several hours, then blowing out in the reverse direction to normal flow with clean compressed air.
- Flow capacity: up to 275 scfm
- Port sizes: 3/4 and 1 inch
- Filter element: 5-micron rated polyethylene; optional 5-, 20-, 40-micron sintered bronze
- Replace element when pressure differential reaches 8 psid
- Sintered bronze elements are cleanable; polyethylene elements must be replaced
- Differential pressure gauge option available
- Bowl options: polycarbonate or metal
- Drain options: manual or automatic internal drain
Drain Configurations
Available with manual drain or automatic internal drain (AID) configurations. Manual models require periodic draining by turning the drain knob clockwise. Automatic drain models self-drain but can be manually operated. Flexible 3/16-inch ID tubing can be installed on the drain stem for remote discharge.
Materials of Construction
Filter body: Aluminum. Bowl: Polycarbonate bowl with steel shatterguard, or aluminum bowl with clear nylon sight glass (bowl ring: aluminum). Seals: Nitrile. Replace polycarbonate bowls with metal at any sign of crazing, cracking, or deterioration.

Applications
Point-of-Use Air Filtration
The Inline Filters, High-Capacity Series 275 scfm is suitable for point-of-use filtration at pneumatic control stations, FRL assemblies, and inline positions where particulate contamination must be removed from compressed air before it reaches valves, cylinders, and instruments.
Modular Air Preparation Systems
Modular series filters connect directly with ROSS regulators and lubricators using standard modular clamp connections for compact, efficient air preparation assemblies. The modular design simplifies maintenance and reduces installation complexity.
Safety and Compliance Standards
Depressurize and lock out the compressed air supply before any service work per OSHA 1910.147 and EN 1037. Polycarbonate bowls are for compressed air only — do not use with hazardous fluids. Use the metal bowl guard at all times. Replace deteriorated polycarbonate bowls immediately.
Installation and Setup Guide
Installation Steps
Depressurize and lock out air pressure. Install the filter vertically with the drain mechanism at the bottom. Follow the flow direction arrow on the filter head. Install upstream of regulators, lubricators, and valves, and as close as possible to the device being served.
Element Replacement Procedure
Depressurize and lock out pressure. Remove the bowl assembly by turning counterclockwise. Remove the filter element. Install new element. Reassemble and ensure all O-rings are correctly seated. Lubricate O-rings with lithium grease. Torque bowl assembly per original instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: When must the filter element be replaced?
A: Replace the element when it is visibly dirty or when the pressure differential across the filter reaches 8 psid. For automatic monitoring, install a differential pressure gauge.
Q: Can polyethylene filter elements be cleaned?
A: No. White polyethylene elements must be replaced, not cleaned. Sintered bronze elements can be cleaned by soaking in solvent for several hours, then blowing out in reverse direction to normal flow with clean compressed air.
Q: How do I operate the manual drain?
A: Turn the drain knob clockwise to discharge accumulated liquids. Return the knob to the counterclockwise position when done.
Q: How do I manually operate the automatic internal drain?
A: Turn the drain knob clockwise to manually actuate the drain. Return to counterclockwise for automatic operation. Flexible 3/16-inch ID tubing can be attached to the drain stem for remote discharge.
Q: Can polycarbonate bowls be used with any fluid other than compressed air?
A: No. Polycarbonate bowls are for compressed air only. Do not expose to alcohol, liquefied petroleum gas, acetone, or other fluids that attack polycarbonate.
Q: What orientation is required for installation?
A: The filter must be installed vertically with the drain mechanism at the bottom. Horizontal installation prevents proper drainage.
Q: Where in the air line should the filter be installed?
A: Install the filter upstream of regulators, lubricators, and valves, and as close as possible to the device it protects.
Q: What O-ring lubricant should I use?
A: Lubricate all O-rings with lithium grease during reassembly to ensure proper sealing and ease of future disassembly.
Q: What is the ROSS FRL warranty?
A: ROSS warrants Filters, Regulators, and Lubricators (FRLs) for seven years from date of purchase against defects in material and workmanship.
Q: How do I order replacement elements and bowl assemblies?
A: Contact your authorized ROSS distributor or call 1-800-GET-ROSS. Visit www.rosscontrols.com to find your nearest ROSS distributor or download replacement parts documentation.
